Alvin’s Story Part 1
Alvin Slaughter is a powerful Gospel singer who follows his own ego and agenda instead of God’s. He becomes too full of himself as the director of his church’s choir. His wife, Gloria throws him out. Alvin separates himself from God, and takes a job selling shoes.
Reluctantly, he visits the Brooklyn Tabernacle and fills out a visitor’s card. Unknown to him, Gloria does the same. The pastor invites them both to come meet with him. Alvin auditions to sing in the Brooklyn Tabernacle choir and becomes one of their featured soloists. God brings Alvin, Gloria and their children together in a miraculous way.
Elliot Avenue in Yonkers, NY was inhabited by drug pushers and dealers. The police knew about Elliot Ave. but were unable to do anything about it. Artie, who loved the Lord, gets drunk and starts ranting at a crack house. Arrested several times for disturbing the peace, Artie brings out the entire neighborhood to protest. Brian, worked on Wall Street and was always in control. He went on a men’s retreat and was so inspired, he went home to take control of his family’s piety. That didn’t work too well so he prayed. God answered Brian in a challenging way.
Bill had two near-death experiences serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, he began an advertising career as an art director in New York City. A tragic accident causes him to lose almost everything, in desperation, he turns to God and creates a legacy of art titled, “In His Image”.
A phone call to a crisis hotline reveals Cal’s decision to commit suicide. Cal, an advertising executive blames himself for letting his business take precedent over his family’s needs. The volunteer who takes Cal’s phone call leads him down the path of redemption that’s unfamiliar to Cal. God’s grace at work.
Their third baby girl was delivered by a caesarean operation and remained in the hospital for 3 months. Now on oxygen, an open lung biopsy was ordered. The results show that contaminated blood was used in a transfusion ordered at the previous city hospital. Both babies and now Debbie’s, fate hang in the balance. Paul’s faith in a loving God helps him to turn this tragedy into a wonderful, lasting, legacy.
Denise was brought up in a parochial school where she didn’t think much about God until her sister dies of an aneurysm. Bobby, her sister’s husband, is an ungrateful drinker who wants to go chill out and leave his kids for Denise to raise. Denise blames God for all this but her husband, Mason, encourages Denise to pray for Bobby, his kids and an answer.
While rock climbing in Colorado, the knot in Don’s repelling rope slips, plunging him 70 feet to a rock ledge below. This story is about how God is healing Don’s physical hurt while God, working through Don, is healing his brother’s emotional hurt after a disappointing divorce.
Greg had an alcoholic personality. Never being wrong, he subjects his wife, Chris, and their two daughters to every whim that came his way. After years of a one-sided marriage, Chris files for divorce. When Greg is told that Chris is in a coma from an accident, he reluctantly prays. God steps in to help Greg with his new faith.
Jack’s troubles started in high school. Jack is expelled so his buddy, Ralph, cuts him in to the mob. Jack sells drugs to an undercover cop and is sent up to the Big House. In the next cell, Crazy Jake torments Jack until Jack threatens to cut him with a ‘shank’made out of razor blades.
Out of prison, Jack, high on heroin, misses an appointment with Ralph. Called before the mob he’s given one week to straighten up. Caught selling drugs to another undercover agent, Jack is sent to the Big House again. This time his cellmate is Crazy Jake, who is now a Christian. God works in mysterious ways.
Jamie is in a coma from an accident. His mother, Barbara, is devastated. Jamie’s father, Carl, has Multiple Sclerosis and is bitter. Absorbed in self-pity, Carl has no time to believe in prayer. When the children at Barbara’s church pray for Jamie, Carl is moved to see Jamie in the hospital. At the same time, Jamie comes out of his coma
Drugs, drinking and fighting puts Jeff in Jail. Released, he doesn’t change. He moves in with Donna, drives a semi and wants to marry her. They see a pastor and Jeff is told to go to AA and marriage counseling. That didn’t last long and Jeff is thrown out. Only God’s grace and prayer helps Jeff to overcome his addictions.
Jim’s alcoholic problem began in high school and on into adulthood. He meets Sonia, and 4 years later they get married. Sonia, tired of Jim’s drunkenness, moves back to Poland with their 3 children. Jim loses his job and sobers up. Sonia returns and they seek help. A Christian counselor brings Jim to his knees…in prayer.
This is a story told by Kevin, a Young Life leader, about Jenny, who makes a poor decision with a boy she likes and becomes pregnant. Jenny’s decision starts a downhill spiral that threatens to destroy her life, the life of her child and that of a friend who is trying to help her.
Divorced and her children grown and gone, Liz faces radical surgery alone. She checks herself into the hospital and calls her sister. Before driving up to help Liz get a few ‘second opinions’, her sister prays and calls her prayer chain. God takes over and Liz finds the perfect answer to all her problems.
Marie grew up in an intellectual, agnostic family. As a result, she had no faith. One of her daughters, Patricia, was not growing normally and she didn’t know why. Maria, reluctantly, prays for an answer. An acquaintance suggests that Patricia might have Turners Syndrome which can be treated successfully. God answers her prayer by placing the right people at just the right time.
Mark hears God speak to him. On a men’s retreat, God says, “Mark, don’t you trust me?”. A friend tells Mark he quit his job because God wants him to feed the hungry by buying a huge food company. Mark is cool to his friend’s story. However, Mark jumps in and the prayers begin.
In college, Marty has a horrible auto accident after a party leaving him with partial paralysis, a speech impediment and a loss of motor skills. Suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury and in deep depression, Marty’s health issues are compounded. Through his mother’s faith, Marty is able to accept God’s love back into his life.
A hard-rock drummer and part time artist is caught up in the drinking and drug scene. Matt’s wife, Carla, is pregnant and Matt wants her to have an abortion. Matt gets a day job so they have a steady income and can afford to add to their family. When a big paying drummer job falls through, God opens a door for Matt that changes his life.
Mike grew up in New England not really knowing much about his parents or his 3 siblings. Only at his sister Gloria’s funeral does he learn about her life in Colorado and how she impacted her community. His other sister dies from a mix up in her meds. Mike vows, with God’s help, to keep his family knitted tightly together.
Rosemary grew up in a happy home but an accident changed her life. A spilled pot of scolding water burns half of her body leaving her disfigured. Skin grafts and related problems plague her life. Ashamed of her scars, Rosemary reluctantly agrees to go on a blind date. One year later she marries Joe and the happiness she knew as a child returns.
